A dental implant is an artificial tooth root which acts as a replacement of missing tooth and is surgically placed into the gums in the jawbone. For replacement of missing tooth dental implants are considered the best compare to other treatment options such as bridge or denture because it gives excellent aesthetic results and are durable, can even last a lifetime with proper oral care.
However, there is no treatment option that give 100% positive results and that is the reason why failure of the implants should be acknowledge. Dental implants do fail even perform with utmost care. The success rate of implants is around 95% that means of 500 implants placed, an average of 25 will fail.
There are various reasons for implant failures. Few of which are –
Low quality – use of low quality implants when the patients try to settle for cheaper solutions. There is a logic why certain implants cost more than others.
Peri implantitis or Infection – it is one of the main reasons for implant failure and can occur during or after implant surgery. It affects hard as well as soft tissues leading to bone loss and implant failure. Sometimes, the dental cement use for fixing the crown with titanium post get leak into the gums causing infections. Peri-implantitis can be treated but in most cases the implant need to be remove and replace. Individuals with thin gums, diabetic, smokers, poor oral hygiene are more prone to peri-implantitis. Loose Implants and crowns – loose implant is cause by substandard fixtures and when the implant is not placed on solid bone surface. On the other hand, loose crowns can be due to improper fitting.
